Year 10 Transition Evening • Key Elements of KS4 • Attendance Matters • How to Survive KS4 • Work Experience • Key Dates in KS4
The Curriculum • English • Maths • Science • PE • ICT • PSHE The Core The Options 2 – 4 subjects
Setting • English, Maths and Science set according to ability • based on prior attainment, innate ability, teacher recommendation
Qualifications • GCSEs • BTEC (Sport; Dance; Health and Social Care, Vocational Studies) • OCR Nationals (ICT) • MOS (ICT) • AQA adult literacy and numeracy awards
Exams • all GCSEs now linear • exams sat in Summer of Year 11 • Core Science sat in Summer of Year 10 • Additional Science sat in Summer of Year 11 • Internal mock exams in Summer of Year 10 and before Christmas in Year 11 • BTEC and OCR National courses now have an exam component
Coursework • no coursework in Maths or RE • “controlled” coursework in all other GCSE subjects • anything between 20% and 60% of final grade in these subjects
Progress for all • not just C grades • cross-curricular, employability skills • extra-curricular activities • tracking • intervention encouraging fully-rounded, confident individuals, able to participate as positive citizens
Attendance Matters Is 90% a good attendance figure? = ½ day missed every week = 4 whole weeks of lessons missed = ½ a school year missed 90% attendance 1 school year at 90% attendance 90% attendance over 5 years of secondary school Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = 1 GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DCFS)
Attendance Matters Attend and Achieve • If a school can improve attendance by 1%, it will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment. (DfES) • Ensure your child’s attendance remains above 95%, allowing him/her to achieve his/her potential. • It will also help secure a good judgement in the school’s next inspection.

School Placements on-line database opened in January (updated weekly) students will be given a login and password during registration time in early January noticeboard in corridor by KS4 Office How can students find out about school placements?
How can students make their choice? advice from tutors/teachers/family choose between 3 and 6 placements (enter on-line) – placements are not considered in rank order check hours, transport and clothing requirements carefully before choosing completed by February half term no contact with business until placements are confirmed School Placements
How are placements allocated? Priority is given to students who are doing a subject with a particular requirement for work experience or who have an additional educational need Other available placements are allocated by the school, according to what has been requested. We cannot guarantee students will get one of their choices, but we will try to match them with a similar alternative. School Placements

Student’s Own Placements (SOPs) contact potential employers check that the placement is not already on the database students, parents and employers complete the pink SOP form health and safety check (The Employability Partnership) confirmation
