Work Experience - WEX • Date: w.c16.12.19 (4/5 days) • Documents will be emailed to parents • Finding a placement • School offers a number of placements to chose from. • Employer Liability Insurance • Outside of borough – parents take responsibility for Risk Assessment and Employer Liability Insurance • Completed form for 20thSeptember.
Exam Weeks - Mocks • Mock 1: 16.09.19 & 23.09.19 • Mock 2:06.01.20 & 13.01.20 • Students sit exams in the hall under exam conditions. • Students should prepare for these exams to give themselves and teachers a true reflection of their strengths and weaknesses. • Date: 27.1.19 • Students experience opening their exams in the hall as they do in August on results day. ‘Period 6’ Mondays • February Onwards – Monday 1 hour after school • Students selected and directed to targeted intervention • Seen as compulsory. • Date: 31.1.20 • ½ Day at Oldham Athletic Football Club • Revision and exam preparation • Focus on transferable skills., Exam Revision and Preparation Day
Super Learning Days • Students are expected to be in school until the date of their last exam • A timetable is created in which students attend a full morning or afternoon in preparation for their next exam.
After-school Revision Catch-upARC • Intervention is a key part of ensuring good progress is made by all students in Year 11. • Intervention sessions can take place throughout the week, Monday – Friday after school or at lunch. ARC • If students are working below their target grade they will be asked to join ARC on a Monday night after school – 1 hour. • Complete a Intervention Record Booklet and target folder.

Sixth Form life is very different to main school, a fresh challenge, in a familiar place! Students have more free time BUT… • They are expected to work independently – this is essential for success – get practising this NOW! • Be self motivated • Meet all deadlines and be organised • A Levels are hard so students need to think about whether they are the route for them!

Extended Project Qualification The Concept: • The opportunity to gain invaluable experiences that will help in university or job applications & interviews and aid personal development Skills it will help to develop are: • Communication, leadership, team building, flexibility, open mind, negotiation, and the list goes on
Aspire programme • This is a programme for high achieving sixth form students who follow an advanced pathway to gain entrance in to prestigious universities (Red Brick, Russell Group) or competitive courses • Students will be provided with a wide range of additional activities to equip them with the skills and experiences they require for a successful future • Aspire Activities include summer schools, master classes, mock interviews, Cambridge shadowing scheme and university lectures • Specialised guidance and support is provided by selected, experienced Academic Tutors e.g. Dr Whitworth, Dr Pannell • More details are on the Aspire section of the Sixth Form Website

SIXTH FORM - Aim of this evening and the Taster Day: • To guide and advise students about Post 16 provision • Focus students in Year 10 to understand what Sixth Form involves and get them thinking about their future • Set realistic targets for students in order for them to achieve their potential and be able to take the courses they need for their desired career path • For students to understand that A Levels are hard and they are not the only pathway available
What STUDENTS need to be thinking about… • What are their career aspirations? • Where do they want to go Post 16? • If Sixth Form - then what subjects are they interested in taking? • What do they need to be achieving in these subjects to be able to study them in Sixth Form? • All the work that they do now will affecttheir final GCSE grade.
What they need to do… • Research the career pathway they are thinking about • If unsure have a meeting with Mrs Fraser – Positive Steps Careers Adviser and look at the options • Do work experience to gain insight • Extra Curricular activities in and out of school to improve their credentials to employers, Sixth Form, universities etc.. • Wider reading, listening to the news, reading newspapers, listening to the radio, podcasts etc.. • Work HARD!!
TASTER DAY Friday 21st June Students will all have their own individual timetable on the day to attend the sessions they have chosen The day will be based in the Sixth Form Centre, with the rest of the Sixth Form so they can experience what Sixth Form life is really like. The day will take the form of nine 30 minute sessions All students will attend 2 sessions on Job Applications and Personal Statement writing Students will all get a 30 minute free period at some point in the day – experience the 6th Form centre Students will be able to choose 6 sessions from the list on the session selection sheet that has gone home These sessions consist of all A Level subjects and other more vocational options
TASTER DAY Friday 21st June • All lessons will be informative ANDa true reflection of what Sixth Form lessons are really like • In all sessions students will be given the opportunity to ask questions and gain more information about the subjects they have picked
Entry Criteria - All students will pick 3 A levels from the start of year 12 • Our entry criteria asks for an average of a score of a 4 in GCSE grades over all subjects taken • Each individual subject has its own entry criteria in addition to this • It is important that students understand that most A Level courses require a 4 in English Language and Maths [see entry criteria sheet] • There are 2 pathways available based on GCSE scores to ensure the students are on the right courses (4 + 5.5 [Maths, Sciences etc])= Appropriate courses to suit the needs of the students

Crompton House Career Adviser • School Careers Adviser • Work with students in Year 8 and upwards • Based in school 3 days a week (Monday , Wednesday and Friday) • Provide impartial Careers Information, Advice and Guidance. (CIAG) • One-to-one guidance and group work • I don’t tell students what they can or can’t do. • I don’t make decisions for students.
Raising the Participation Age • The Government increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training. • All 16/17 year olds are guaranteed an offer of a suitable place in education or training.
What does this mean for your child after year 11? • Study full time in school sixth form (16 hours a week?) - You can only do A levels in year 12/13. • Study a vocational course - You can do vocational courses at any age but you would have to pay at 19 years old. • An Apprenticeship/Traineeship - You can get one at any age • Full time work or volunteering combined with part-time education or training - You can do this at any age • Note – 100% of Crompton House students entered education, employment and training in 2018
The Qualification “Ladder” • Choices will be influenced by GCSE results THE HIGHER THE GRADES- THE MORE CHOICES THEY GET. • Many apprenticeships require GRADES 4-9 • Students without GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 will be required to study these further WHATEVER PATHWAY THEY FOLLOW.
Vocational Courses • These courses may appeal to students who want to focus on, and find out more about, a broad area of work • ‘General’ vocational areas e.g. Business; Health & Social Care; Art & Design; Engineering, Construction and Built Environment • Work experience – links with the world of work: Applied Learning • Mainly assessed through coursework • Offered at different academic levels (Level 1 – 3) • Progression - can lead to HE, apprenticeships or employment • At level 3 (BTEC Extended Diploma), graded Distinction*/Distinction/Merit/Pass and have UCAS points

Apprenticeships They need to consider • Treated as an employee = act like an employee • Need to be doing things now to ensure you have a strong CV (work exp, D of E, Voluntary Work, Prefect) • Need to be proactive – Job seeking • Need positive reference from school • A good route if you prefer to be “doing” while learning. • Some apprenticeships can lead to Higher Education.

Traineeships • Stepping stone to apprenticeships and work: work placement • Opportunity for young people, aged 16 to 24, who are motivated to get a job but lack the skills and experience that employers are looking for. • Employers are not required to pay young people for taking part in a traineeship but may support with expenses such as transport and meals. • The work placement is a real opportunity to gain meaningful work experience. • Opportunity to improve level of English and Maths qualifications if not at GCSE grade 4
How Can You Help? • Support during open events • Check letters/information on website. • Help them to think about their strengths – you probably know them better than anyone (even if they don’t agree!). • Encourage them to consider a range of options before deciding what they want to do or where they want to apply to. • Make sure they attend interviews and return any paperwork. • Keep in touch – if you have any concerns or questions contact me through school by email adelefraser@positive-steps.org.uk
