  1. Censorship Parts 1 & 2 Mr. DezilvaGrade 11 April 8th, 2013.

  2. Introduction As long as humans have sought to communicate, others have sought to prevent them from doing so. Every day someone tries to restrict or control what can be said, written, sung, or broadcast. Almost every idea ever thought has proved objectionable to one person or another, and almost everyone has sometimes felt the world would be a better place if only "so and so" would go away.

  3. Censorship has always been a part of our society, in order to control what people view and perceive.

  4. What is Censorship? censorship: to remove or suppress what is considered morally, politically, or otherwise objectionable.

  5. Why is Censorship Important to Art & Beauty? • Socrates: In 399 BC Socrates was tried, convicted, and executed. He was charged with corruption of youth and his works were banned. • Freedom of Expression: Government Law • History of Censorship • China (Past and Present) • Nazi Germany • North Korea • Iran

  6. Cont’d • Books & Literature: • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) by Mark Twain • (Racism, slavery and “N-Word” usage) • The Catcher in The Rye (1951) by J.D Salinger • (Rebellious Teen, Curse words, Moral Values, Sexuality) • To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) by Harper Lee • (Rape, Racism, Values)

  7. Re: To Kill A Mockingbird “The terminology in this novel subjects students to humiliating experiences that rob them of their self-respect and the respect of their peers. The [N Word]' is used 48 times [in] the novel... We believe that the English Language Arts curriculum in Nova Scotia must enable all students to feel comfortable with ideas, feelings and experiences presented without fear of humiliation... To Kill a Mockingbird is clearly a book that no longer meets these goals and therefore must no longer be used for classroom instruction” http://www.thestar.com/life/parent/2009/08/12/complaint_prompts_school_to_kill_mockingbird.html
