Aalto University name celebrates diversity and innovative method • The name "Aalto University" is a tribute to a courageous, overarching renaissance man, Finnish architect, designer and academic Alvar Aalto • He distinguished himself in not only the fields of technology and economics, but also art. • The name has been chosen to reflect the concept, spirit, values and goals of the new university.

The Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture of the School of Engineering have merged • to form the new School of Arts, Design and Architecture. • The new school will carry forward the internationally recognised expertise created by its predecessors. • The new school combines design, media, architecture, film, art education and art, and has a strong and active international presence. Creativity means that more people have a better everyday life
The first part of the school's name emphises human-orientedness, which is the cornerstone of all teaching and research. The second part of the name centres on practicalityand good design, which produce better and more responsible living environments.
For useful art The school educates professionals and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills. It is a sought-after place to study and a desired partner. The activity of the school is built on a multi-disciplinary and international profile, pioneering in research and strong in art, as well as on effective social and cultural innovation.
Campuses The departments of the school operate at their current facilities at Arabianranta in Helsinki and Otaniemi in Espoo until the new premises are completed at Aalto University’s shared campus in Otaniemi. This is estimated to take place In 2015.
Throughout their history both the former School of Art and Design, and the Department of Architecture together with its alumni have influenced the culture and economy of Finland and the field of European design and architecture.

About our research A wide range of research and research programs touch every unit of school. A strong international component in the student body and faculty, and wide international connections. Design has been identified as one of the key strengths and research foci of Aalto University. Our key areas of research are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, well-being architecture and emerging technologies, and urban planning and design.

Examples of research groups and projects Living Places (Design) The research at the Living Places is focused on the experiential aspects of living environments including home, workplaces and services in the urban area. Living Places is a multi-disciplinary research unit established as Future Home Institute in 1997 as part of the University of Art and Design Helsinki. During its history, the institute has realized over 60 research projects together with other research units and companies, mainly funded by Tekes (Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation), Ministry of the Environment, Academy of Finland and companies. The research aims at producing knowledge that can give input to user-centered design and development of environments, products and services enabling changing patterns of everyday living.
SmartTES Research project, 2010-2013 (Architecture) Innovation in timber construction for the modernisation of the building envelope . The main objective of Smart TES is to advance the method of energy efficient building modernisation with large-scale prefabricated timber elements based on the results of TES Energy Facade. TES Energy Façade is a novel approach for tackling climate change and offers new opportunities for wood in refurbishment.
Participating Aalto University is one of the Design Capital partners. World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 Helsinki is 2012 World Design Capital together with Cities of Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. living.aalto.fi Aalto's design capital program Living+ creates better living environments in a sustainable fashion. Living + program consists of more than a total of 30 projects.
Living+ Living+ presents different ways of improving our everyday life with new solutions, in Finland and globally. 365 Wellbeing 365 Wellbeing highlights new working methods in design, such as service design and the opportunities it provides for municipal decision-makers and the general public using the services. The project will aim at finding ways of encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles and helping designers and municipal decision-makers to design more pleasant and healthier environments.Examples of the services include planning the Villa Breda service home for the elderly in Kauniainen to include cultural services, developing of the environments and practices in psychiatric care units in Helsinki, and projects to design online services for basic health care and to create smoke-free public environments.
