  1. BP’s Ultimate Field Trip 2014

  2. What is the UFT? The Ultimate Field Trip, or UFT, is a team-based competition for students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Students from all over the country form teams of three and put their talents together to tackle a real-world energy challenge over four months. The UFT currently runs in the UK, the US, Trinidad & Tobago, Angola and Canada. Each country’s winning team gets a place on a two-week international field trip. From the start of the competition to the last day of the trip, the UFT is an unforgettable and life-changing experience.

  3. Why we do it It puts us in touch with the brightest minds and the best talent. It raises our profile with the right students on a local, national and global scale. The trip helps winners understand what life at BP is really like, both in terms of scale and career opportunities. It allows undergraduate talent to see how the knowledge and skills you learn through your degree can be used to take on real challenges in our industry.

  4. Why enter? There are a whole host of reasons to join the UFT. And the amazing prize at the end is just one of them.

  5. Why enter? It’s a learning experience. The UFT is the perfect opportunity to test your technical knowledge and apply that with a real-life challenge. You’ll learn a lot about yourself and your team mates. You’ll see what it takes to succeed in a global oil and gas business.

  6. Why enter? You’ll develop valuable connections. You’ll make contacts at BP through networking opportunities and with your industry mentors if you get to the finals. You’ll get answers and advice from experts who are happy to help. You’ll be exposed to scientists and engineers at the top of their field, challengers starting out at BP and senior level leaders who are pushing the boundaries of BP’s future. You’ll meet like-minded students – and not just those in your own team. Campus/Semi-finals, national finals and our dedicated Facebook group mean there are plenty of opportunities to meet great new people.

  7. Why enter? The prize With two weeks exploring BP’s US operations, meeting our people and experiencing a whole range of different cultures, our grand prize is an amazing end to a challenging competition.

  8. What can I win? BP’s Ultimate Field Trip has seen winners visit our largest deepwater oil field in the Gulf of Mexico, get up close to Shetland ponies, dive into Norwegian fjords and experience the huge scale of a global oil and gas business in Trinidad and Tobago. But what can 2014’s winners expect as they experience our operations in Alaska and the Chicagoland area?

  9. What can I win? BP Ultimate Field Trip Week 1 On the 21st June, winning teams the US, the UK, Trinidad & Tobago, Angola and Canada will join BP’s Alaskan interns in Anchorage. As well as an induction and the chance to meet industry experts, they’ll get to tour our facility and learn about exploration and upstream in Alaska. The next day the field trip officially begins, with three days experiencing BP’s Energy Plan Workshop alongside our Alaskan interns.

  10. What can I win? BP Ultimate Field Trip Week 2 From Alaska, winners will fly out to join our teams in Chicago and experience the BP trading floor in action. Time in Illinois will also include a visit to our Research Centre in Naperville, plus the chance to meet with our Refining Technology teams and discover what life on the leading edge of the industry is like. Finally, the five winning teams will get a tour of our state-of-the-art Whiting Refinery, which processes some 413,000 barrels of oil every single day. The UFT will finish on the 4th of July, meaning winners will spend their last day experiencing one of America’s biggest holidays first-hand – and the fireworks, food and hospitality that goes with it.

  11. What does it take? Make no mistake, the UFT takes time and commitment on top of your coursework. So as well as a viable idea and a solid team where everyone plays their part, you’ll need to show real commitment.

  12. What does it take? “Make sure you manage your time effectively and have an idea that you’re passionate about.” Ravier Weekes, Team Innovo, Trinidad & Tobago “It’s important to think on your feet. At the final rounds of the competition we were asked questions that we never thought of before.” Michael Richards, Hybrid Alternative Power Solutions, USA “Enjoy the technical challenge you’ve been set and work as hard as you can to get to the final.” Eric Brown, Team Hydra, UK

  13. What are the judges looking for? Meeting the challenges of the future demands a high level of technical rigour and innovation, and that’s exactly what our expert judges look for in submissions. Teams have to prove that their ideas are practical, scalable and financially viable.

  14. What are the judges looking for? • Rigour • Has the idea been thought all the way through? • Have you considered the economic and political implications? • Is it safe? • Teamwork • Was it really a team effort? Or is this one person’s work? • Do you present well and work together to answer questions? A good idea • Is it technically feasible? • Is it innovative with the potential to be commercialised? • Can it catch the judges off-guard?

  15. UFT Competition Process

  16. 2014 Challenge The problem: Energy companies consume large amounts of energy in running their operations. The challenge: More efficient use of energy. Identify an innovative solution that will significantly reduce energy consumption and be implemented by 2025, with the potential to scale across the energy industry. This could apply anywhere from point of capture to point of sale of energy products, and potentially even create a new product stream.
