Ecosystem Changes and Succession: Natural Events and Human Impacts

Explore the dynamic nature of ecosystems in this presentation by Travis, Shannon, Carter, and Jackson. Learn how natural events like disasters and organism-driven changes, along with human actions, can alter ecosystems. Discover the effects of these changes, including extinction and endangered species. Dive into the concepts of succession, from primary to climax communities, and understand the process of ecosystem development. Gain insight into secondary succession in established communities post-disturbance, such as after a fire or logging.

  1. Chapter 4 Ecosystems and Biomes Lesson 2 Changes in Ecosystems Travis , Shannon ,Carter , Jackson’s Power Point

  2. How Can Ecosystems Change ? Most ecosystems are constantly changing. Ecosystem changes can be caused by natural events or by human actions. Natural Events include Natural Disasters and changes caused by organisms. Earthquakes, Floods, Storms, Volcanoes, Droughts, and other Natural Disasters can drastically alter ecosystems. Aquatic ecosystems are also changed by organisms.

  3. Recall that algae can sometimes rapidly reproduce using all the nutrients and oxygen in the water • Humans cause ecosystem changes by chopping the environment to meet their needs. • Without natural predators introduced species can threaten or even kill off local species.

  4. What happens when ecosystems change? • Some ecosystem changes are permanent • When the last member of a species dies, the species becomes extinct.extinct • When a species is in danger of becoming extinct it is called endangered • Species with low numbers can become endangered are threatened species • Some endangered species are Pitcher Plant, Karner blue Butterfly, flying squirrel, hawksbill sea turtle

  5. What is succession? • The process of one ecosystem changing into a new and different ecosystem is called succession. • Primary succession begins in a community where few, if any living things exists. • Pioneer species are the first species in an otherwise lifeless area. • Along with microorganisms, the pioneer species make up the pioneer community.

  6. The final stage of succession in an area, unless a major change happens is climax community.

  7. What is Secondary Succession ? • Secondary succession- the beginning of a new community where a community had already existed. • Secondary succession can take place in a forest after a fire or logging has occurred. • Secondary succession occurs faster than primary succession. • Then after many years the pine forest has a lower layer full of small hardwood seedlings.
