Risk Estimates The risk of someone in the USA being infected right now is "infinitesimal," said Fred Kilbourne, an actuary in San Diego and an expert on risk. He calculates the prospect as one in 1 million, the same as the risk of being killed in a crash of a commercial jet. "The average American is twice as likely to be killed next year in a bicycle accident, and 150 times as likely to be killed in an automobile accident, and about 1,500 times as likely to die of clogged arteries," he says.
