Teacher training has been a cornerstone of EKU since its beginnings. Model Laboratory School was established along side Eastern Kentucky State Normal School in 1906 Model’s mission was to acquaint college students with the methods of teaching and serve as a training school for prospective teachers. In 1922, Eastern Kentucky State Normal School became a 4-year institution and Teachers College. Model Laboratory School is the last remaining laboratory school in the Commonwealth. Model Lab School is an integral part of EKU, providing practical experiences for EKU students across programs and majors. College of Education Observation, Practicum, and Student Teaching for Pre-service K-12 teachers Clinical Experience for speech pathology students College of Nursing Practical and applied experiences for community safety Clinical and lab experiences for OT majors Psychology Clinical assessment as testing experience for prospective school psychologists. Sustaining the Commonwealth’s last remaining laboratory school is currently possible only through multiple funding sources. Tuition and Fees $2.7M Disbursements from MadisonCounty Public Schools, includes partial SEEK* $2.363M EKU, E&G, corresponds to amandate conferred by CPE $2M____ Total ** $7.06M *Based on a 1990 agreement, Madison Co Schools caps Model Enrollment at 791 students and provides EKU with the SEEK portion of Model’s ADA minus local effort, capital outlay, and administration fees equal 12.7% of the SEEK amount plus $5000. ** Does not include prior, historic capital and facility-related expenditures for the Donovan complex that houses the Model Lab School; these expenditures represent another portion of EKU mandate-support. The now 56 year-old Donovan Building housing Model Lab School is beyond repair and in need of replacement. • Health, Safety, and ADA Accessibility are compromised by outdated, nonfunctioning, and antiquated systems, infrastructure, and architecture. • Design and configuration of classroom space is not conducive to implementing or modeling modern pedagogies and technologies. • Size and capacity does not allow for growth and expansion.
