  6. Great Fear • Louis XVI called troops to Paris • Peasants attacked manors and monasteries in rebellion • July 14, 1789- rioters captured the Bastille

  7. Radical Revolution • Jacobins took over the Assembly • Created the National Convention and began the First Republic- abolished monarchy • Because many did not support the radicals, the Reign of Terror began to punish Enemies of the Republic

  8. Napoleon • 1799- overthrew the Directory, 1st Consul(Enlightened Absolutist?) • Fixed Church relations • Fixed the economy • Fixed education • Fixed the legal system • Expanded borders

  11. The End • 1814- enemies chased Napoleon back to Paris and captured it • Napoleon was exiled to Elba for retirement • Bourbon monarchy restored • 1815- Napoleon escaped and regained power for about 100 days • Waterloo- final military defeat • Exiled to St. Helena off coast of Africa
