Outline • SSC recommendations (from the 15th SSC Meeting Ubatuba, May 2004) • LBA Publications Management • Proposal for a New Web Site • Study for LBA data/metadata integration • Migration plan for the LBA-ECO Web database system to the Central Office • LME and Beija-Flor Training • Activities to support Central and Regional offices

SSC recommendations (from the 15th SSC Meeting Ubatuba, May 2004) Each of the LBA associated projects designate a data contact to coordinate with LBA DIS staff regarding integration of metadata/data into the LBA DIS system Action:Completed. The LBA DIS be provided on a regular basis the necessary disk storage capacity to meet increasing data storage demands Action:200 Giga bytes added to the server on July 2004. Another expansion is planned for 2005. LBA Central Office is providing all resources possible to guarantee data storage and management.

  4. Last SSC recommendations (from the 15th SSC Meeting Ubatuba, May 2004)cont. Authors of LBA publications register the appropriate metadata and submit the associated data to LBA DIS for archiving Action: Work in progress 4. The LBA DIS evaluates long-term archive requirements for LBA data at CPTEC including data documentation and metadata quality assessment, and differentiating data of varying documentation completeness Action: New documentation tool added to Metadata Editor. On-going work in progress!

  5. Last SSC recommendations (from the 15th SSC Meeting Ubatuba, May 2004)cont. 5. The LBA DIS discusses the archival of selected model products and documentation with individual PI’s. We suggest that the LBA DIS members consult with the SSC members (Alan Betts, Roni Avissar) for guidance when necessary. Action: Work in progress. Landsat TM data can be used as an example.

Action: User-friendly manuals have been created and put on-line. Manuals have been used in training classes. LBA Publications Managementcont. • STEPS: • Request the Author’s authorization regarding copywrite issues • Index the material with INPA’s Library identification; • Selection of publications key-words; • Use the AACR2 (Anglo American Cataloging Rules) to catalog the publication data; • Use the DDC (Dewey Decimal Code) to classify the data (With this anyone can locate the material in the library”); • Insert the data into the INPA’s Central Library database including the abstract and an associated PDF file if available; • Any LBA authorized publication can be printed by request and send to users by snail mail.

Study for LBA data/metadata integration and Long Term Archiving First study just started: LBA DIS and SIPAM Metadata Integration (initiative resulted of a meeting held in the 15th SSC) Move towards an Amazonian DAAC LBA sponsored a visit to ORNL Steps identified during initial study with SIPAM and discussions at ORNL: Acquisition Ingest Enhance Documentation Marketing and Distribution Post-Project Data Support User Working Group

  13. Study for LBA data/metadata integration and Long Term Archivingcont. Acquisition - identify how best to serve the multi community - establish how and when to receive data acquire data Ingest - perform QA checks - reformat for consistency - compile project-provided metadata - generate additional metadata, as needed - select keywords

  14. Study for LBA data/metadata integration and Long Term Archivingcont. Enhance - add supplementary variables - standardize to common units - aggregate files Documentation - collect available documentation - prepare data set documentation for each data set, instrument, etc.

Marketing and Distribution - advertise to user community and inform current users about new data (as requested) - provide data access to users worldwide - answer user questions Post-Project Data Support - provide long-term secure archiving of the data - provide usage statistics to data providers Post-Project Data Support - science panel that provides advice on all aspects of the DACC
