LBA-DIS Working Group Report Luiz M. Horta LBA Science Steering Committee Meeting Brasilia May 16-18, 2001
Topics • Beija-flor Data Registration Status • LBA-DIS System Updates • Data Ingest Activities • LBA-DIS WorkGroup Concerns
Beija-flor Registration StatusDecember 2000 => May 2001 • LBA-CLAIRE (6 => 6) • LBA-EUSTACH (19 => 29) • LBA-Europe (15 => 15 ) • LBA-Brazil (7 => 7) • LBA-Ecology (52 => 88) • AERONET (23 => 23) • Regional Data (19 => 19) • LBA-Hydromet (4 => 5) • LBA-TRMM (2 => 2) • Non-LBA Amazonia Data (31 => 31) • Total increased: 181 => 232 (+ 51) • Data sets increased: 106 => 152 (+ 46) • Posters increased: 75 => 80 (+ 5)

LBA Data Sets By Science Theme Total=152
LBA-DIS System Updates • LBA home page web site • Redesigned pages are on production server • Web site maintenance an ongoing LBA DIS task • Science Team Information (STI ) • “Cloned” STI now operational at CPTEC • Personnel searches, email distribution lists, LBA Group Lists • Spatial searches improved in Beija-flor • Can now handle coordinates for individual sites within a data set, in addition to the “bounding box” for overall data set • Data & posters can now be differentiated in LME • Documentation tool • Ready for DIS WG review • Expect to be publicly available in a short time as part of LME
Document Editor fields are modeled after the 20-section DAAC Guide Document • Fields may be added, modified or deleted without changing underlying software Tool Integration LME == Metadata Tool + Documentation Tool Metadata Documentation • Poster Link(+) (0/2 items completed) • Search Text Link (+) (0/2 items completed) • Other Link (+) (0/2 items completed) • Data Documentation (+) (45/88 items completed) Documentation Tool
Using the LME Transitioning between Metadata & Documentation • Both tools are fully integrated • Investigator can easily switch between metadata and documentation edits • Information is automatically exchanged between metadata and documentation Metadata Documentation Documentation Tool
Data Ingest Activities • EOS Webster (UNH / LBA-Ecology / ESIP) • Working with Berrien Moore’s group to integrate “on the fly” data processing capabilities of Webster with search capabilities in Beija-flor • May be able to use technology learned in this activity to integrate with other LBA data centers that have similar interactive data processing capabilities • LBA-HydroNET (UNH / LBA-Hydromet) • Working with Charlie Vorosmarty’s group to make the hydrology/climatology data in the HydroNET archive available via Beija-flor
Data Ingest Activities (cont.)Non-LBA Amazonia Data • DIS WG requests authority to evaluate potential non-LBA funded data for registration into Beija-flor • Recommendations would be approved by SSC representatives in the DIS WG • IAI-DIS interactions • Can be achieved with minimal effort from LBA DIS • IAI-DIS working to resolve minor technical problems at their end • ANEEL Hydrology/Climatology Data • Seek input from interested SSC members re: prioritization • Mangrove Dynamics and Management (MADAM) Data • Will be made available to LBA community via Beija-flor at no resource costs to LBA
LBA DIS WG Concerns • We encourage registration of posters from all LBA science meetings • Due to recent security violations NASA/GSFC has blocked access to BRN. This may have some impact on LBA • LBA DIS ready to centrally archive data; investigators preferring to host data on their servers • Data Policy Working Group • DIS WG members Holger Hoff, Merilyn Gentry and Luiz Horta to serve on the data policy WG • Ready to help define data policy and investigate ways of improving compliance
Data Policy Working Group • Suggested Data Policy WG roles/responsibilities • Identify classes of data for determining reasonable data policy requirements pertinent to each class of data, e.g. physiology data, models, remote sensing, surveys, derived products • For each class of data define: • What constitutes a “data set”? • When does the one-year clock start ticking? • What data quality objectives should be met? • What level/extent of documentation is adequate?
Data Policy Working Group Suggested Roles (cont.) • Define compliance • Does registration in Beija-flor + public availability at the PI web site = compliance? • What is “data” and what is not? • Field log books, note books, unprocessed/raw data • Posters, journal reprints, etc. • Though a valuable information source, does data policy require that these be archived? • Analysis of the situation • The DIS WG encourages the LBA project to actively pursue an analysis to determine the obstacles to data registration and submission and is prepared to participate in this effort.
