  2. Reason vs. Resurrection • Science sees resurrection as archaic superstition. • There is nothing new about doubting the resurrection. • Jesus challenged doubters in His time • Through His word we can challenge doubters today. • What evidence do we have of the resurrection?

  3. Matthew 22:23-32 – Dealing with doubting Sadduccees • Confronting Resurrection Doubters • Sadducees believed in scripture, but not resurrection. • They found the doctrine to be unreasonable.

  4. Acts 4:1-2 -- The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. • Jesus believed in the resurrection. • Peter and John believed in the resurrection.

  5. Acts 17:32 -- When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, "We want to hear you again on this subject.“ Some Greeks found the doctrine of resurrection to be foolishness. It was unreasonable. But Paul believed. • Confrontation with Greeks

  6. But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. • 1 Corinthians 15:12-13

  7. Some of the Corinthians were teaching that there was no resurrection of the dead. • But Paul gave them reasons to believe. • Paul was a well-educated man. One of the best educated of his time. And he believed in the resurrection.

  8. I Corinthians 15:3-8 -- …Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day … and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. • Doctrinal Truths Concerning Resurrection

  9. Romans 10:9 -- That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. • So, resurrection is an essential doctrine. • We must believe in the resurrection to be saved.

  10. Resurrection is central to our baptism experience • Colossians 2:12 -- …having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

  11. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. • Resurrection is central to our faith in God. • 1 Peter 1:21

  12. Our belief in resurrection is based upon eyewitness testimony. • Jesus, Peter, John, the rest of the apostles, two Emmaus bound disciples, Thomas, Mary of Magdala, Paul, more than 500 brethren, Stephen….

  13. 1 Corinthians 15:19 -- If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. • 1 Peter 1:3-4 -- Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!   14. Hebrews 2:14-15 -- Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. • No fear of death

  15. Acts 2:24 -- But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. • Romans 8:1 -- Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

  16. Hebrews 6:19-20 -- We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. • 2 Timothy 1:12 -- That is why I am suffering as I am.
