AAPMA ENGINEERS’ WORKING GROUP 19-21 August 2006Newcastle Mr Larry Hore Manager Engineering Port of Townsville
The Plan After Darwin • Work up a course with a recognised education provider • Send out survey to possible candidates in ports, government departments, consultants etc both in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Rim to determine the “real” extent of the support indicated to date. • Obtain endorsement from PIANC, Engineers Australia and the international certifying body IMAREST. • Provide distance learning Masters Course on Port Engineering taking 2 or 3 years to complete. First course offered in 2007.
Key Dates in Review Aug 05 AAPMA Conference Darwin Sep 05 Ports and Coast Conference Adelaide. Contact made with Ron Cox, Associate Professor and Director, Water Research Laboratory, University New South Wales. Significant support from a wide cross-section of conference attendees Oct 05 Working group established consisting of Gary Bendell, Port of Brisbane Corporation and Toni-Lee Andrews from Port Kembla Oct 05 Established likely course content Nov05 Frustrating period of inaction from -Feb06 UNSW Feb 06 Terminated efforts with UNSW Feb 06 Made contact with Tom Hardy, Vice President (Academic and Research) of Australian Maritime College Feb06- After initial feedback, no substantive July06 from AMC yet.
Possible Topics For Post Graduate Port Engineering Studies 1. Structural Design of Marine Infrastructure • Wharves • Buoys • Fenders • Ramps • Rock Walls • Marinas • Perhaps something to do with the new Marine Structures Code 2. Dredging • Basics of fluid dynamics • Study of equipment 3. Hydrographic Surveying • Data collection • Single and multi-beam measurements • Corrections for vessel movement • Topographic survey • Perhaps something to do with GIS
Possible Topics For Post Graduate Port Engineering Studies (cont.) 4. Port Design • Harbour geometry • Intermodal layouts • Queuing theory • Perhaps something on the PIANC guidelines 5. Corrosion Protection • Characteristics of cement and concrete • Characteristics of metals • Corrosion of reinforcement in concrete and metal in sea water • Measurements • Paint and other coating systems • Cathodic protection
Possible Topics For Post Graduate Port Engineering Studies (cont.) 6. Coastal Processes and Modelling • Modelling basics • Coastal dynamics • Sediment transportation • Storm surge • Commercial modelling packages 7. Civil Works for Ports • Pavements • Roads • Reclamation • Geotechnical • Stormwater 8. Ships, Pilotage and Navigation • Ship dynamics • Navigation and navigation aides • Naval Architectural design • Perhaps something to do with the USL code
Possible Topics For Post Graduate Port Engineering Studies (cont.) 9. Electrical and Electronic Systems • High voltage systems • Lighting • Fault protection • Transients and harmonics • Security systems • Fire detection systems 10. Legal Studies and Insurance • Contract law and conditions of contract • Negligence • Professional indemnity • P & I Clubs 11. Environmental Engineering • Biological processes • International conventions, EPBC and Sea Dumping Acts etc • Impact Assessment – sampling design, stats etc • Coastal management planning principles
The main contents of the modules and their assigned ECTS credit points are summarised below.
Problems and Issues UNSW - Key people talk tough but did not deliver - Funding turmoil. Were debating if they will even have post graduate courses. AMC - Initial feedback was positive. - Recently merged with University of Tasmania. - All about dollars.
What we know so far • Wide support amongst ports, consultants and others both in Australia and overseas such as New Zealand, PNG and Sri Lanka. • Learning institutions consistently show initial interest - because the idea is just right!
Where to next • Internal support? • AMC still preferred? • Delft? • Smaller Universities? (Do the project at all costs)? • How to carry this forward? • Anybody else like to take over?
