PROJECT ENERGIZE Working with Your School in 2007
Project Overview • A Waikato District Health Board Initiative • Aim:To increase the amount and quality of physical activity and to improve the nutritional status of school age Waikato children. • 2004-2006 Research Project with two components, Evaluation and Intervention • Evaluation involved a range of physical measures of consenting 5 and 10 year olds; a home questionnaire and school stock take – baseline and end point. • Intervention involved a facilitator working in programme schools to support them with physical activity and nutrition initiatives.
Where to from here? • Continued Project funding granted for 2007 with research results due mid year • Control Schools offered opportunity to become a Project Energize ”Programme” School in 2007 • Project Energize is formally linked to other ‘through schools’ initiatives such as Fruit in Schools ( Cancer Control Strategy) and Active Schools ( SPARC)
The Project is managed by Sport Waikato • Te Kohao Health • Nga Miro Health • Te Korowai Hauora O Hauraki • South Waikato Pacific Island Health Committee • SPARC • School Of Education (University of Waikato) • Wintec • Environment Waikato There are a number of Project Partners
Activity Objectives • To encourage a minimum of 20 minutes quality daily physical activity • To advocate for and encourage lunchtime physical activity at least twice a week • To encourage and advocate for at least five minutes of ‘homeplay’ every day • To encourage a reduction in sedentary time especially screen time if over 2 hours day • Identify and raise awareness of incidental activity opportunities at home and school • To raise awareness of the importance of children learning fundamental movement skills • To encourage and advocate for links to ‘Active Schools’
Nutrition Objectives • To encourage and promote water as the best drink • To ensure water is available in class • To encourage the consumption of milk and other high calcium foods every day • To advocate for and encourage improvement in food brought from home • To increase the awareness of the importance of breakfast and encourage a breakfast habit • To work towards registration in the National Heart Foundation School Food Programme • To work towards consistent nutrition messages in all aspects of school and community interaction eg. healthy fundraising options
Fruit in Schools • Fruit in Schools (FIS) is a government initiative that aims to promote the health and wellbeing of children in schools • FIS uses a Whole School Community Approach • FIS focuses on 4 priority areas: • Healthy Eating • Physical Activity • Sunsmart • Smokefree
Your school has been selected to be a part of this nationwide programme and is one of only 29 schools in the Waikato to be invited onboard • The goals of Project Energize and FIS are closely aligned and in the Waikato FIS works within a Project Energize framework. • What do we receive? • FIS will provide fresh fruit to each child in your school each day for 3 years. The fruit is intended to be in addition to fruit children receive from home. • What do we have to do? • Schools involved agree to work collaboratively on the 4 focus areas outlined • Schools agree to increase parent and community participation in FIS related activities
Where do we start? • School wide Needs Analysis • In Physical Activity: • What are we doing well? • What could we improve? • In Nutrition: • What are we doing well? • What could we improve?
Project Energize Plan • With areas of need identified schools may then select from a menu of possible initiatives, activities and programmes which meet these needs • However we must consider: • Is the initiative we agree on going to change attitudes and behaviours around physical activity and nutrition? • Does the initiative have long-term sustainable outcomes? • From the identified needs and agreed initiatives a Project Energize School Plan will be devised. • Each school ‘owns’ their plan and sets their own timeframes.
