Educational Reform • The goal was to improve public education • Horace Mann tried to promote better schools. • Girls and African Americans would struggle receiving an education still • By 1850’s, most northern schools have free public education
Prison and Mental Health Reform • Goal was to improve prison conditions and mental health facilities • Dorthea Dix led the battle to improve conditions, persuading the state of Massachusetts to build facilities for the mentally ill • More states would soon follow and more special hospitals for the mentally ill were built
Antislavery Movement • Abolition movement started to end slavery • Wanted the emancipation (freedom) of all enslaved people • Leaders included William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass, who was African American
Women’s Rights • Movement to gain more rights for women was slower and mixed • Harriet Beecher Stowe – author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin • Catharine Beecher – teacher of women roles • Sojourner Truth – Preached against slavery and women’s rights • Harriet Tubman – leader of the Underground Railroad
Underground Railroad • Network of secret routes and hiding places for escaping slaves • Led by guides along the most dangerous routes • Rescued about 300 slaves • Southern slave owners put bounties for the capture or killing of conductors
