Partnerships & Relationships • Everything is built on relationships and trust • From the beginning we have listened to the Local Authority in regards to their needs • We have provided what has been needed by commissioners and not what we think • they need • By listening to advice and delivering on what is needed, we have been given more • opportunities
Why we need a school and who is it for? • In 2014 Government Legislation put in law the need for every child to be registered with an establishment recognised by the Department for Education • Local Authorities were no longer able to hold the registration of a child independently • from a registered education establishment • Illegal schools, inadequate education provision and the rise of Alternative Provision • created a political storm which Local Authorities wanted to avoid
Questions to ask…. • What are we preparing our students for? • What is working within our organisation already? • What resources do we have? And what do we need? • What can our students cope with?
Moral Compass • Who are we? • What do other people know about us? • Is branding important?
Ofsted • Standards • Why? • How do you know what you know? • Understanding you as a school
Our philosophical approach • Banking Compassion: we invest in staff and young people without any guarantee of a return. Our faith in the power of people and community underlies the importance of the compassion that we ‘bank’ in the hope that people will respond positively, even when this can take a long time to come about, if at all. • Reasoned Empathy: we believe that we are at our most effective as colleagues, educators and role models in the sector when we are able to empathise without exercising self-indulgent selflessness. We need to take good care of ourselves and each other to ensure we are capable of delivering at our very best.
Our philosophical approach • Managed Risk: without risk, we risk being ineffective in making relationships with hard-to-reach young people. We also take managed financial risks to resource our staff and other collaborative partnerships. Responsible Growth: we are committed to growing our organisation responsibly. To do this we need to find innovative ways of funding our work that limit our reliance on precarious funding streams, and allow us to provide stable and long-term support for those who need us most.
