  1. BSE: update on surveillance FDA TSE Advisory Committee Bethesda, MD October 31, 2005 Lisa A. Ferguson, DVM Senior Staff Veterinarian USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services

  2. Total BSE cases worldwide • Cumulative total – greater than 189,000 cases • Greater than 96% in United Kingdom • Greater than 89% occurred in 1996 and before • OIE website lists current reported totals: • www.oie.int

  3. EU monitoring - 2004 • EU-15 now EU-25 • Total of 11,049,822 bovine tests • 1.5 million risk animals, 9.5 million healthy slaughter • 865 positive (699 in risk/suspect, 166 healthy sltr) • Number of cases decreased by 37% • Overall prevalence in tested animals decreased by 38%

  4. EU monitoring - 2004 • Reductions and increasing age of positive cases indicate success of control measures • Analysis by year of birth of positive animals • Peak of exposure appears well defined in some Member States • France, Ireland – 1995 • Germany, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands – 1996 • TSE monitoring in small ruminants • 1 goat positive for BSE (slaughtered in 2002)

  5. US - Enhanced BSE Surveillance GOAL: Obtain as many samples as possible from the targeted high-risk population in a 12-18 month period

  6. BSE Surveillance Plan • Targeting population where disease is most likely to be diagnosed – most efficient • Assumption if we cannot find disease in targeted – or most likely – population, even more unlikely to be found in non-targeted population • Use data obtained to extrapolate information about broader cattle population

  7. BSE – Targeted Surveillance • Non-ambulatory animals • Dead stock • Field CNS Cases and on-farm suspects • Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory data • Public health laboratories • Ante-mortem condemns at slaughter

  8. Surveillance: NVSL Bovine Brain Submissions FY 93-04 (through 5/31/04)

  9. Enhanced BSE Surveillance • Total – ELISA and IHC tests conducted since June 1, 2004 – through October 23, 2005 • 1 positive – June 2005, Texas, 12-year old Brahma-cross (Bos indicus) cow 512,698 (503,391 ELISA and 4,907 IHC)

  10. Enhanced BSE Surveillance • Evaluating for appropriate geographic distribution; populations as expected • Vast majority of samples from deadstock, non-ambulatory animals – as expected • Good representation from all collection sites, with majority from animal disposal facilities as expected • Detailed analysis at completion
