The Order of the Garter • Founded by Edward I in 1348 • The first British order of chivalry • Legend and the motto • Joan and Edward I • Included the monarch and 25 knights • Membership in the order was intended as a mark of royal favour and a reward for loyalty to the sovereign and for outstanding military service. "Shamed be he who thinks evil of it"
100 Years’ War (1337-1453) • Edward’s claim to the French throne • Decisive battles • Crécy (1346) • Poitiers (1356) • Agincourt (1415) • Orleans (1429) The English employed a new method of warefare with great success that combined forces of longbowmen with dismounted men-at-arms. } } The French eventually gained the upperhand. Joan of Arc led a relief force which successfully defeated the English. The next 25 years of engagements saw continued French victories.
