  2. Social Location - Advantage Walk The purpose of this exercise is to provide participants with an opportunity to understand the intricacies of social location in American society.

Social Location - Advantage Walk Common themes in reflections • Biggest advantages listed: parents, grandparents, public school, health, overall appreciation • Obstacles: parents’ education, finances, alcoholism, parent that passed away, language barriers • Some obstacles not mentioned in questions: emotional instability in home life, special learning needs, abuse • Questions reflect SOME aspects of social location, outline some of the topics we will look at this semester

  30. Malaria • Over a million people die from malaria each year • Spread by mosquitoes • Anti-malarial drug often not available • Best cure is prevention, mosquito nets for beds • $6 donation can provide a net to save lives UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO).

  31. Measles • A million deaths per year • Do not usually die directly of measles, but from its complications • Preventable through vaccines • Less than $1 per vaccination can save lives UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO).

  32. Tuberculosis • Kills well over 1.5 million people each year • Highly contagious – one person can infect 15 • Children can be vaccinated, adults cannot • Long antibiotic treatment needed

  33. Diarrhea • Kills 1.6 million people each year, almost all of them children. • Result of unclean water • Malnutrition causes death • Treatable with a mixture of water, salt, and sugar that replenishes the lost fluids

  34. Pneumonia • Kills more than 2 million children each year • Contagious • Not enough doctors or health care • Solution-train one person in each village to recognize symptoms and dispense antibiotics
