State Standard • GLE 0507.T/E.3 • Identify appropriate materials, tools, and machines that can extend or enhance the ability to solve a specified problem. • Objective: • Students will learn the six simple machines and their uses. • Students will be able to spot simple machines in their everyday life and determine their best uses. • SPI 0507.T/E.1 Select a tool, technology, or invention that was used to solve a human problem.
Technology Standard • Standard 3.0 • Students will use technology productivity tools. • 3.1 • Students will use technology tools to enhance learning increase productivity, and promote creativity. • Accomplishments • 5.3.1. Students will use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. • a. Use subject specific information gathered through technology resources for a variety of curriculum subjects. • c. Use simulation software and tutorial software to assist with learning. • d. Use online help and documentation (help buttons/menus/guides, readme files, Ask an Expert web sites, electronic tech support).
I Can Statement • I can identify different simple machines and their uses • I can pair appropriate simple machines to real life situations • I can use technology to enhance my learning
Simple machine flipbook • Take four(4) sheets of paper and fold into a flipbook • Label the front of flipbook “Simple Machines”, include name and date, and on the inside of the flap include a definition of simple machines • Label each flap with the six(6) simple machines; the last flab will be labeled “notes” for any additional information found or provided for students • Inside the flap, illustrate and define each simple machine. Also include at least 2 examples of each simple machine seen or used in everyday life *Students please use the flipbook as a graphic organizer to take notes on the following topic
What is a simple machine? • A simple machine can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that provide mechanical advantage. • There are six simple machines: • Pulleys • Levers • Wedges • Wheels • Inclined Planes • Screws
Pulley A simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a load.
Lever A stiff bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum which lifts or moves loads.
Wedge • An object with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge, which may cut material apart.
Wheel & Axel A wheel with a rod, called an axle, through its center lifts or moves loads.
Inclined Plane A slanting surface connecting a lower level to a higher level.
Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a pole which holds things together or lifts materials.
Additional vocabulary • Mechanical Advantage- the number of times a machine multiplies your effort force. • Fulcrum- The point on which a lever rests or is supported. • Force - Strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement.
