  2. What do you know about simple machines?

  3. Vocabulary . Compound Machine:   Two or more simple machines working together to make work easier. Examples: Wheelbarrow, Can Opener, Bicycle • Force : You are doing work when you use a force to cause motion. Machines make work easier, but they need energy to do work. A person is usually the source of energy for a simple machine. A person uses a force to operate a simple machine. A force is a push or pull. The force applied to to the machine is called work input or effort force. •  Work: You are doing work when you use a force to cause motion. To measure the amount of work you do, multiply the force times the distance the object moved.

  5. There are six kinds of simple machines. • Lever • Wheel and Axle • Pulley • Screw • Inclined Plane • Wedge

  6. Lever • A lever is a stiff bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum which lifts or moves loads.

  7. Wheel and Axle • A wheel with a rod, called an axle, through its center lifts or moves loads.

  8. Pulley • A pulley is a simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a load.

  9. Screw • A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a pole which holds things together or lifts materials.

  10. Inclined Plane • An inclined plane is a slanting surface connecting a lower level to a higher level.

  11. Wedge • A wedge is an object with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge, which cuts material apart.
