  4. Maintenance Issues • Low Shoulders require maintenance dollars • Kent County’s shoulder repair costs for 2011 where $450,000. • Over $160,000 in new gravel. • Equipment and Labor • Involves constantly working in traffic

  5. Pavement & Shoulder Maintenance • Damage to outside edge of pavement • 7 shoulder repair units

  6. 3 Different Projects • Bailey Drive –between Vergennes St and Boynton Avenue (2.65 Miles) • Ada Drive –between Fox Hollow Dr and Thornapple River Dr (1.31 Miles) • 18 Mile Road– Casnovia to Peach Ridge Ave (1.5 Miles)

  7. Selection Criteria • Bailey – Narrow shoulder and horizontal curves • Ada Dr. – Narrow shoulder for higher volume • 18 Mile – Narrow shoulder

  8. Safety Edge

  9. 30 to 40 degree

  10. Three methods • Crush and shape and 2 Course Resurface • Placed Safety Edge on both courses • Single Course overlay • Trenched existing shoulders to place safety edge • Crush & Shape and 2 Course Resurface • Placed Safety Edge during Top Course

  11. Items to Consider • Cost to Place (including trenching) • Asphalt Valley Gutter Areas • Gravel loss at edge (incline) • Trapping Water on Shoulder • Compaction

  12. COST Additional HMA 30 Additional Tons per Mile/Side (3.5 inch Depth) 1 Mile Both Sides @ $55/ton = $3,300 Trenching Existing Shoulder Estimated Cost = $1,000 per mile
