  1. Introduction to Multimedia

  2. Definition of Multimedia • Any combination of text, animated graphics, video, and sound delivered to you by computer or other electronic means. • A collection of various media that comes together to form a single unit. (MULTI-media) • Information that can be represented through a variety of media.

  3. Continue… • Computer information can be represented through audio, video and animation in addition to traditional media • It is a field concerned with the computer controlled integration of text ,graphics, drawing ,still and moving images, animation audio and any other media where every type of information can be represented, stored ,transmitted and processed digitally

  4. Convergence • What is it? • Technology • The overlapping of multiple types of media into single multimedia devices. • Fields of Study • Computer Science areas are overlapping. Graphics Visualization, Compression, Networking, Database Systems, etc.

  5. Areas of Topics and Projects • Three Main Areas • Multimedia processing and coding • Content analysis, security, audio/image/video processing, compression, etc. • Multimedia system support and networking • Network protocols, operating systems, servers and clients, quality of service, databases, etc. • Multimedia tools, end systems, and applications • Hypermedia systems, UI, authoring systems, etc.

  6. Multimedia • Interactive multimedia • The end user controls what is delivered when. • NON-linear • Hypermedia • A computer-based information retrieval system that enables a user to gain or provide access to texts, audio and video recordings, photographs, and computer graphics related to a particular subject.

  7. Software Tools • Categories • Music Sequencing and Notation • Cakewalk, Cubase, Macromedia Sound Edit, etc • Digital Audio • Cool Edit, Sound Forge, Pro Tools, etc • Graphics and Image Editing • Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, etc • Video Editing • Adobe Premiere, Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, etc • Animation • 3D Studio Max, Maya, etc • Multimedia Authoring • Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Director, etc

  8. Types of media

  9. Non temporal media • Text • Graphics(image,shapes,pictures) Temporal media • Video • Audio • Animation

  10. Text • Text in the form of words, sentences and paragraphs is used to communicate thoughts, ideas and facts in nearly every aspect of our lives

  11. The multimedia products depend on TEXT for many things • To explain how the application work • To guide the user in navigating through the application • To deliver information for which the application was designed • It forms the basis for many multi media system

  12. Characterstics of TEXT

  13. Elements of TEXT • Page Titles • Delivering information in the form of multiple sentences and/or paragraphs • Labels for pictures • Instructions for operating the application

  14. TEXT TECHNOLOGY Text technology is based on creating letters, numbers and special characters • Typefaces are the graphic representation of the text vary by type, size and style. • Font is a particular size of typeface; e.g.14 points Times New Roman

  15. Some more Characterstics of TEXT • Ascender is an upstroke on a character, and can be found in the letters h,b,l,d • Descender is down stroke below the baseline of character; and can be found in the letters p,q,g,y • Leading is the spacing above and below a font;i.e line spacing • Tracking is the spacing b/w character

  16. Continue… • Kerning is the space b/w pairs of characters • Serif is the flag or decoration at the end of a character stroke serif Ascender BDyb Av Tracking descender Kerning

  17. Effects on Text • CASE:upper and lower version of each letter a,A • Regular:standard version of a font • Bold:standout emphasis on text • Italic:abcd • Condensed and expended • Underline • Strikeout

  18. Types of fonts • Serif fonts • Times and Times new Roman • Courier • Bookman • Sans serif • Arial • Helvetica • Avant Grade

  19. TEXT DATA FILES • ASCII: The simplest form of data encoding for text is ASCII ,it is a 7-bit coding scheme.E.g.65-A…..90-Z • The ASCII character set is the most common way to encode, store and transmit text b/w applications and computers

  20. Encoded or Formatted text : it uses embedded codes to determine the appearance of the text • In most cases ,the text data format is ASCII • The codes are separated with special character such as <> or line feeds etc • The HTML is an encoded text ,it can be used to define • Typeface and size of the font • For bold, italic, underline • For bullets, indenting and alignment • Page layout header, footer, bgcolor, page no • Etc…

  21. Rich Text Format • It has gained significant acceptance as a means to store and manipulate text • It a proprietary format owned and controlled by Microsoft Corporation for use with word processor • It provides a number of font formatting features • Many mm application have incorporated features to import and export RTF data to maintain formatting established in other documents

  22. Hypertext • Hypertext system use text that is indexed or “marked-up”to navigate through large volumes of information. • It allows the interface to combine information and user control • Two general strategies for hypertext system • Indexed Retrieval • Linked or Hyperlink

  23. Indexed Retrieval system • It consist of text that is indexed to other words • Help programs use this approach to create lists of items to make finding help topics easier • This system may be fully or partially indexed

  24. In partially indexed system • Text is usually highlighted indicating a link to another word or another part of the document • Sets of words are identified and automatically linked to other keywords In fully indexed system text is fully categorized;in other words all words are indexed for fast retrieval

  25. Linked or Hyper linked System • Linked or hyperlinked systems use specific linkages b/w text elements and bookmarks within a document. • Bookmarks are predefined locations in a document that can be referenced by hyperlinks, every link is defined and set by an author

  26. Hyperlink consist two elements • A text expression that is highlighted or set apart by underlining, bolding or other means to diffrentiate its appearance from other text • Link information that is correlated to the highlighted text and the destination
