Screens and Photographs Do these images show the same picture ? Why ? Task A By: Youssef Rashad
Introduction • Photography is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a sensitive medium. Seeing is believing, therefore images play an important part of our lives. It is very hard to pass a day without seeing an image ( television screens, book covers, cinema’s, posters, advertisements etc ) . Do you think that different dimensions of photographs show the same images? Do these images show the same picture ?
ASPECT RATIO • The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of the width of the image to its height, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon. That is, for an xby y aspect ratio. No matter how big or small the image is, if the width is divided into x units of equal length and the height is measured using this same length unit, the height will be measured to be y units.
These two images show the same image because I locked the aspect ratio which means I divided x and y by the same number which made the picture look normal. • To get the same image you should lock the aspect ratio. Tall and thin Tall and thin X= Width Y= Height
This is because if the width ( x ) is multiplied/divided by different numbers than the height (y) the picture will look totally wrong. For example if you have a picture of a tall skinny lady and you multiply x and y by different numbers the image will look totally different like picture below. • Let’s say you go to take a picture in the size of 4x6, after taking the picture you decide to change the size. After you get the other picture, you find out that you look totally different. This is because the photographer did not multiply/divide the width (x) and height (y) by the same number so the image looks different. Thin and Tall Short and fat • X= Width • Y= Height
Thin Examples: Fat Circle Different image because I did not lock the aspect ratio. I multiplied x and y by different numbers. Oval • X= Width • Y= Height
Fat Fat Examples: Circle Same Images because I locked the aspect ratio. I divided x and y by the same number Circle • X= Width • Y= Height
Conclusion • Photography is a vast and wonderful topic, with lots of information. This is just a small piece of photography, as you can see it needs a lot of intelligence and hard work.
