Essay topic • The creation of the federal union in 1867 entailed many compromises of competing political values and interests. • What values and interests had the biggest impact on the design of the Canadian federation? • How might those values and interests have been affected differently under two major theoretical alternatives: 1) a confederal union; 2) a unitary state ?
Another option • Instead of the two theoretical options, you could compare how the federation in Canada might have turned out if it had adopted either the United States or the Australia model.
