3. Dental Careers • Focus on the health of the teeth and soft tissue of the mouth • Prevent dental disease • Repair or replace diseased or damaged teeth • Treat the gingiva and other supporting structures of the teeth

4. Dental Places of Employment • Private dental offices • Dental laboratories • Dental clinics • Dental departments in hospitals • Health departments • Government agencies

5. Dentists (DMDs or DDSs) • Doctors – examine teeth and mouth tissue to dx and treat disease and abnomalities • Perform surgery on teeth, gums, and tissues • Try to prevent dental disease • Supervises other dental workers • Most are entrepreneurs

6. Dentists • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or • Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) • Education required is 4 year college degree and 4 years of dental school (If specializing – need 2 more years) • Earn $84,000 to $200,000 • Must have licensure in state of practice

9. Dental Hygienists • Associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree • Need licensure in state of practice • Earn $33, 700 - $69,000 a year

10. Dental Laboratory Technicians (DLT’s) • Make and repair dental prosthesis (dentures, crowns, bridges, etc) • Work under written orders from dentist • Education – 3-4 years on the job or associate degree • Need certification • Earns $19,400 - $52,600 • Some are entrepreneurs

11. Dental Assistants (DAs) • Must be supervised by a dentist • Prepare patients for exams • Pass instruments • Prepare dental materials • Take and develop X-rays • Teach preventive care • Sterilize instruments

12. Dental Assistants (DA’s) • Can schedule appointments and handle accounts • Education – 1-3 years on the job or associate degree • Licensure or registration needed in some states • Can get certification from National Board • Earn $15,600 to $31,200

13. Emergency Medical Services • Provide emergency pre-hospital care to victims of accidents, injuries, or sudden illnesses • Training offered by fire, police, and health departments, hospitals, vocational schools, and community colleges

Emergency Medical Technicians Ambulence /Basic (EMT-B) • Administers initial treatment for emergencies such as illnesses, shock, burns, wound, bleeding, and fractures • Can clear airway obstructions and give O2 • Provide basie life support • Can help deliver a baby • Can rescue trapped victims • Can transport victims to medical facility

18. Emergency Medical Technicians Ambulence /Basic (EMT-B) • Education: 110 hours approved EMT program with 10 hrs of ER internship • Need state certification • Some states require registration by National Registry of EMTs • Earn $19,200 - $32,300 a year

19. Emergency Medical Technicians Defibrillator (EMT-D) • Has additional training after becoming an EMT-B. • Can administer electrical defibrillation to certain heart attack victims

20. Emergency Medical Technicians Intermediate (EMT-I) • Perform same tasks as EMT-Bs • Assess patients • Interpret EKGs and administer defibrillation as needed • Manage shock • Use intravenous (in the veins) equipment • Administer some medications • Insert esophageal airways

21. Emergency Medical Technicians Intermediate (EMT-I) • Education – EMT-Basic plus at least 35 – 55 hours with clinical experiences • State Certification • Registration required in some states • Earn $21,200 - $40,100

22. Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic (EMT-P) • Perform all basic EMT duties • Conduct in-depth patient assessments • Provides advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) • Interprets EKGs • Can do endotracheal intubation • Administer more medications • Operates monitors and other complex equipment

23. Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic (EMT-P) • Education – Bachelor Degree • Can obtain registration • Salary - $32,600 - $70,400
