  1. Journal • Kairos: When will you tell the person? (What’s going on before/after you tell them?) • Audience: Who are you telling? What’s their age or other important details? • Decorum: What language will you use, or how will you phrase this news? You have been given the task of relaying sad news to someone—their beloved family pet has died. Write a scene, letter or dialogue showing your use and understanding of kairos, audience and decorum.

  3. With this in mind… • Rhetoric: • Content • Form • When presenting rhetoric, consider: • Kairos • Audience • Decorum (We will continue to delve deeper into these subjects as the year progresses!)

Classwork:We’re going to listen to excerpts from popular speeches! • As you listen to each excerpt, take note of things that stand out to you as an example of “good rhetoric” • Try and identify the speaker or the audience of the speech • When might this speech have been given? • Can you identify any examples of “decorum” in the speech just from listening to it?
