    1. Chapter 8 Section 1 Magnetism

    2. Magnetic Field An area around a magnet that exerts a magnetic force. Strong force near magnet, weaker away

    3. Magnetic poles Area of the magnet where magnetic force is strongest. All magnets have North and South poles.

    4. Magnet interactions Opposite poles attract North attracts South Like poles repel North repels North

    5. Magnetic Poles Can a North Pole be separated from a south pole? A cut magnet it will retain its north and south poles on each individual piece. They can not be separated!

    6. How magnets are created Made of iron, cobalt or nickel. Magnetic domains, alignment of atom’s magnetic poles.

    7. Geographic vs. magnetic Geographic-North at top of globe, South at bottom. Magnetic North is geographic south, and vise versa (compass)

    9. Section 2

    10. Inducing magnetism By placing a piece of iron through a coil of electrically charged wire you can create an electromagnet.

    11. Inducing electricity By running a piece of magnetized iron through a coil of wire you can create a current in the wire.

    12. Transformers Step up increases voltage while step down decreases voltage. They do this by increasing or decreasing the turns of the coil in the primary or secondary.
