What is it? • Deep-water, long-wavelength carry a lot of energy • Sea waves are dispersive waves • The speed of the wave depends on the wavelength • A sea wave carries of an amplitude A carries an amount of power per unit length of its wavefront • Where is the density of the water • v is the speed of energy transfer in the wave

Oscillating Water Column • As the crest of the wave approaches the cavity in the device, the column of water in the cavity rises • This pushes the air upwards, passing the air through a turbine, turning it • The air is then released into the atmosphere • As a trough of the wave approaches the cavity, the water in the cavity falls and draws air in from the atmosphere
Oscillating Water Column • Wave patterns are irregular in wave speed, amplitude, and direction • It is difficult to achieve reasonable efficiency • It is hard for many devices to couple low frequency in water waves (typically 0.1 Hz) to the higher generator frequencies (50-60 Hz) required to produce electricity • The OWC solves this because the speed of the air in the column can be increased by adjusting the diameter of the valves through which the air pass
Advantages of the OWC • The source is waves and thus “free” • Reasonable energy density • It is inexhaustible • Clean, no carbon emissions
Disadvantages of the OWC • Works only in areas with large waves • Irregular wave patterns make it hard to reach reasonable efficiency • Difficult to couple low-frequency water-waves with high-frequency turbine motion • High maintenance and installation costs • High cost in transporting produced power • Devices must be able to withstand hurricanes and gel-force storms
