The first GTA Grand Theft Auto is made up of a series of levels, each set in one of the three main cities. In each level, the player's ultimate objective is to reach a target number of points, which is typically achieved by performing tasks for the city's local crime syndicate. Each level has its own unique set of tasks. Successful completion of a mission rewards the player with points and opens the opportunity to attempt harder missions for higher rewards, while failure awards few points and may permanently seal off opportunities for more tasks. Completing missions also increases the player's "multiplier", which increases the points the player gets for doing other tasks. Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969 The player names their character and chooses a picture to represent them. The picture is only seen upon completion/failure of a mission and doesn't affect the appearance or personality in any way. The player must work for The Crisp Twins, a parody of The Kray Twins. The expansion introduces 30 new vehicles, 39 new missions, and instead of fictional locations based on real-life cities, as in Grand Theft Auto (Liberty City, San Andreas or Vice City), the game takes place in London in 1969. The player again plays the role of a criminal involved in organized crime. Publishers: Take-Two Interactive (PC) & Rockstar Games (Playstation) Platforms:Microsoft Windows, PlayStation
Grand Theft Auto 2 Grand Theft Auto 2 is set in an unspecified time in a retrofuturistic metropolis referred to only as "Anywhere, USA", but the game's manual and website uses the phrase "three weeks into the futureRadio host Johnny Riccaro mentions in the game that "the millennium's coming," which would set the game in its release year of 1999. The City is split into three levels, or "districts." The first level, Downtown, is a hub of business activity as well as the site of a large mental institution and university. The second area, the Residential District, contains the city's prison, a trailer park with an Elvis-themed bar dubbed "Disgracelands", a shopping mall, and a giant hydroelectric power plant. The third and final area is the Industrial District; it holds a large seaport, a meat packing plant, a Nuclear Power Plant and a Krishna temple. Grand Theft Auto III Grand Theft Auto III inherits and modifies much of the gameplay mechanics from its predecessors, Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2, combining elements of a third-person shooter and a driving game in a new 3D game engine. The idea of using a 3D game engine in such a genre was however not new: the first game to combine elements of action, shooting, and driving various vehicles in a sandbox-style 3D world was Hunter, released in 1991 for the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST home computers. Grand Theft Auto III unexpectedly emerged as a smash hit and became the #1 selling video game of 2001 in the United States. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is an open world action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on 27 October 2002. It is the sixth title in the Grand Theft Auto series, and the first main entry since 2001's Grand Theft Auto III. The game is set in 1986 in fictional Vice City, which is based heavily on the city of Miami and Miami Beach, Florida. The game's look, particularly the clothing and vehicles, reflect (and sometimes parody) its 1980s' setting. Many themes are borrowed from the major films Scarface, Carlito's Way, Goodfellas and Blow, along with the hit 1980s television series Miami Vice. Developer: Rockstar North Publisher: Rockstar Games, Capcom Distributor: Take-Two Interactive Platforms: PlayStation 2, Windows, Xbox, Mac, iOS, Android, PlayStation 3, Amazon Fire TV & Kindle As of 26 March 2008, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has sold 17.5 million units according to Take-Two Interactive, making it the fourth-highest-selling video game for the PlayStation 2. As of 2011 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has sold over 20 million copies.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas San Andreas is structured similarly to the previous two games in the series. The core gameplay consists of elements of a third-person shooter and a driving game, affording the player a large, open world environment in which to move around. On foot, the player's character is capable of walking, eating, running, sprinting, swimming, climbing and jumping as well as using weapons and various forms of hand-to-hand combat. Players can drive a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, buses, semis, boats, fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, trains, tanks, motorcycles and bikes. Players may also import vehicles rather than steal them. As of 26 March 2008, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has sold 17.5 million units according to Take-Two Interactive,[35] making it the fourth-highest-selling video game for the PlayStation 2. As of 2011 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has sold over 20 million copies. Developer: Rockstar North Publisher: Rockstar Games Capcom Distributor: Take-Two Interactive
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories Liberty City's layout is largely similar to Grand Theft Auto III, while it also incorporates elements found in Grand Theft Auto III's successors, such as more indoor environments, clothing changes, and motorcycles. In addition, in keeping with recent Grand Theft Auto games, the player has more flexibility in terms of moving the camera around for viewing surroundings (Grand Theft Auto III is noticeably limited in that respect). Things that are omitted from this game are the ability to climb and the ability to swim - contact with deep bodies of water is instantly fatal in this game. The overall sandbox play area, as it is based upon the original Liberty City layout, is considerably smaller than that of San Andreas. Developers: RockstarLeeds, Rockstar North Publishers: Rockstar Games, Capcom Distributor: Take-Two Interactive, Capcom As of March 26, 2008, Liberty City Stories has sold 8 million copies.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories The open, non-linear environment allows players to explore and choose how they wish to play the game. Although storyline missions are necessary to progress through the game and unlock certain areas and content, they are not required, as players can complete them at their own leisure. When not taking on a storyline mission, players can free-roam. The player can also partake in a variety of optional side missions. The traditional side missions of the past games are included, but have been moderately upgraded and enhanced compared to previous titles. A new addition to the game is "Beach Patrol", in which Victor (the player's character) must deal with bikers on the beach by beach buggy (by ramming or shooting to knock them off their bikes) or throwing life preservers to drowning swimmers by boat or by taking a paramedic around to injured people on the beach. Developer: RockstarLeeds, RockstarNorth Publisher: RockstarGames Distributor: Take-Two Interactive As of 26 March 2008, Vice City Stories has sold 4.5 million copies
Grand Theft Auto IV Grand Theft Auto IV is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Players complete missions—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story. It is possible to have several active missions running at one time, as some missions require players to wait for further instructions or events. Outside of missions, players can feely roam the game's open world, and have the ability to complete optional side missions. Composed of the fictional city of Liberty City, the world of Grand Theft Auto IV is larger in area than most earlier entries in the series. At the beginning of the game, players can only explore the first island–composed of Dukes and Broker–with all other islands unlocking as the story progresses. Players use melee attacks, firearms and explosives to fight enemies, and may run, jump, swim or use vehicles to navigate the game's world. There is a first person perspective option when using vehicles. In combat auto-aim and a cover system can be used as assistance against enemies. Should players take damage, their health meter can be fully regenerated using multiple techniques, such as eating, using medical kits, or calling for paramedics Developer: RockstarNorth Publisher: Rockstar Games Distributor: Take-Two Interactive In the United Kingdom, the game became the fastest-selling game of all time, selling over 631,000 copies in twenty-four hours. As of July 2013, the game has sold over 25 million copies
