  5. A Covenantal Perspective • A morally informed agreement • Long term, mutual relationship • Protects the rights of all members • As Individuals • Mutual accountability and affirmation • Accountable to others • Bound together to care for each other • Can you think of some examples of covenants?

Important Covenantal Terms Hebrew: “Hesed” • Loving fulfillment of covenant obligation • God caring for the Israelite nation • Jesus caring for disciples • Christians caring for “one another” • Mutual Accountability • Accountable to each other (peer to peer) • Followers to Leaders • Leaders to Followers! • Federalism • A term from Covenant Theology • Sharing of power among all members of the covenant

History of Covenant • Old Testament • Introduced by God to man • New Testament • New Covenant fulfilled by Christ • Middle Ages • Lost in hierarchy of Popes and Kings • Protestant Reformation • Renewed in Priesthood of all believers • American Government • Implemented by the Founders • Is Covenant leadership universal?

A Covenantal Model for Leadership “Hesed” as the attitude of successful leaders • Servant leadership, mutual affirmation, teamwork, shared vision, community, etc. • Mutual Accountability • A foundation for organizational processes • Conflict resolution, participation in decisions, empowerment, dialogue • Federalism • Provides organizational structure • Non-centralized, organic, adaptive

The Body of ChristModel for Leadership The Body of Christ • 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4, Romans 12 • A living organism • Motivated by love for one another Mutual Service for each other • The Spiritual Gifts are for the purpose of serving others in the Body • Christ is the Head, God is the organizer (Giver of gifts Structure • Is to be developed OUT OF the giftedness of believers • Results in a myriad of governmental styles.
