OPNet aims to enhance collaboration among Norwegian research institutes working on marine forecasting. This project, supported by the Research Council of Norway and involving IMR, NERSC, and NIVA, focuses on improving forecast tools and methods, developing validation tools, and enhancing understanding of model modules. Through seminars and web-based dissemination, OPNet seeks to strengthen ocean prediction capabilities.

Velkommen OPNet Ocean Prediction Networking
OPNet Overall objective: To strengthen and formalize collaboration among Norwegian institutes involved in research and development related to marine forecasting • Commissioned by: • RCN (Research Council of Norway) • Subcontractors: • IMR, NERSC, NIVA
OPNet • Specific objectives: • To monitor and discuss existing forecast products and their performance to help improving the tools and the methods used to produce the ocean forecasts. • To develop common validation tools that can be run to provide measures of the forecast skill. • To develop our understanding of the strength and weaknesses of the different model modules used by the partners. • To implement and operate a web-page for dissemination of forecasts, and forecast performance, e.g. skill measures.
OPNet: WP1 • WP1: Seminars. • Two day seminars • At least two researchers from each of the partners must attend. • Representative from a selected user groups and from foreign national groups by invitation • Agenda: To discuss • ocean prediction products, • tools and methods, i.e., data assimilation methods, numerical methods, numerical model implementation • results originating from other projects of relevance for ocean prediction. • Deliverables: • Minutes summarizing recommendations made.
OPNet WP2 • WP2: Development and dissemination • Automatic validation product or skill measures of the model forecast. • Display products on a website • Deliverables from this WP are manuscripts documenting and explaining the products. The first of these will document the validation system and its implementation.
