Poor families • Many people were poor in the Victorian times. • Families had up to six children and lots of babies so they were always very busy. • Most children were forced to go and work instead of going to school. • Some children would help out on a farm or stay at home and do the house work.

Work • The wasn’t that much work in the Victorian times but people didn’t have a choice if they had a family to feed. • Most girls stayed at home to help with the family but they worked as nannys too. • Children needed to work hard but they were as young as six!
Oliver Twist • A man called Charles Dickens wrote a book based on a Victorian child called Oliver Twist. • Its about an orphan who escapes the Workhouse and runs away to London. • These are pictures of Oliver, begging for more food.
The Workhouse • The Workhouse was a place where you came to if you didn’t have any job. • It was infected with diseases and was a horrible place. • You got separated from your family first and got put into different places. • People were so desperate to not go there but if they lost their job, it was the only option.
