  2. THE PROBLEM • 30-40% of our incoming freshmen scored Approaching Basic or Unsatisfactory on the 8th grade LEAP test.

  3. THE PLAN • Research-based program to help students “catch-up” • Carnegie Learning – Bridge to Algebra • Classroom component and computer component • Correlates to 8th grade GLE’s • Pilot program • 2 year study • High schools and junior high schools

  4. WHAT WE DID • 4x4 block schedule • Study group • Freshman year-BTA class; Algebra 1, Part 1 • Sophomore year-Algebra 1, Part 2; Geometry • Control group • Freshman year-Algebra 1, Parts 1 and 2

  5. THE CHALLENGES • Administration • Scheduling • Change in administrators • Teacher • New ways of teaching • Parents • “My child…” • Students • New ways of learning

  6. THE RESULTS • Improved behavior and attitudes • Improved performance on constructed response items • Improved test results
