Phonics: Using a Dictionary You have learned that a dictionary lists words in alphabetical order, and gives the meanings, or definitions, of a word. A dictionary can also help you pronounce the word and divide it into syllables. It also tells what part of speech the word is.

Comprehension: Point of View Informational Texts All writers have a point of view. You might agree or disagree with their viewpoint. In an informational text, a writer may want to persuade you to agree with his or her point of view. In the following examples, identify the writer's point of view and decide if they have persuaded you to think as they do.
Example #1: Point of View City Life I love living in a big city. It is exciting to meet people from all over the world. There is a such a great selection of products at the stores. There is so much to do in a big city. I enjoy having plays and museums right in my neighborhood. I feel safe living in an apartment with a doorman at the entrance.
Example #2: Point of View City Life I did not enjoy living in a big city. It was too crowded. I got tired of waiting in long lines. It was also very expensive. I could only afford to eat in a restaurant once a month. I did not feel safe in the city. Many neighbors had their property stolen or vandalized.
