Grammar: Common and Proper Nouns A common noun names any person, place or thing. A proper noun names a specific person, place or thing. Since a proper noun names someone or something, it must be capitalized.

Comprehension:Author's Purpose A writer has a reason, or purpose for writing. There are three main purposes: To persuade To inform To entertain

Persuade Persuade means to try to convince someone to think the same way you do, or to do what you want them to do.It will have facts and reasons. Examples: advertisements, newspaper editorials, junk mail, posters, speeches
Inform Inform means to give information and facts to explain or teach something. Examples: news reports, research papers, encyclopedias, school newsletters, instructions, pamphlets, maps, time lines, schedules, charts, graphs
Entertain Entertain means to amuse someone or describe feelings and emotion. It may have real or imaginary events. Examples: fictional stories, comics, poems, jokes, riddles, journals, diaries, letters.
