Phonics: Words with “er” and “est” Add the suffix “er” to a base word when comparing two things. Example: Tom is taller than Paul. 1.If the base word ends in “y”, you may have to change the “y” to an “i”. Examples: happy ...happier easy .... easier
Phonics: Words with “er” and “est” Add the suffix “est” to a base word when comparing three or more things. Example: Tom is the tallest in the class. 1. If the base word ends in “y”, you may have to change the “y” to an “i”. Examples: dry ...driest funny .... funniest
Phonics: Words with “er” and “est” 2. If the base word ends in silent“e”, drop that “e” before you add “est”. Examples: nice …nicer, nicest late .... later,latest
Phonics: Words with “er” and “est” 3. If the base word has one syllable and a short vowel, double the consonant. Examples: fat...fatter,fattest sad...sadder,saddest
