Cycles of matter Section 4.4
Matter and your body • About 96% of your body is made up of only four elements: Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen. • Organisms cannot always use common elements on earth, Nitrogen is 78% of the atmosphere, but not in a form plants can use. • Unlike energy, matter moves within cycles.
The Water Cycle • Water moves between the ocean, the atmosphere, and the land. Living things also take part in this cycle. • Water moves into the atmosphere through Evaporation (the movement of water into the atmosphere as it goes from liquid to gas) • Water can also enter the atmosphere through transpiration (evaporation of water through plant leaves)
Water Cycle continued • As water vapor cools, clouds are formed. • A water molecule may remain in the atmosphere for about two weeks • It returns to the surface through precipitation: rain, snow, sleet, and hail
Water cycle continued continued • Some rain soaks into the ground and becomes groundwater • It enters plants through the roots, and then atmosphere through the leaves • It can take a water molecule that falls on land 4000 years to complete the cycle
