What is Marijuana • Marijuana is a green, brown, or gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds and flowers of the hemp plant (cannabis plant). • The chemical THC is the ingredient that typically makes a marijuana user high.
How is it used • Marijuana is usually smoked as a cigarette (joint) or in a pipe or bong.
How long does it stay in the body • THC is strongly absorbed by fatty tissue in various organs. Traces of THC can be detected in standard urine testing several days after a smoking session. However, in chronic heavy users, it can be detected for weeks after they have stopped.
Short term effects • Problems with memory and learning • Distorted perceptions (sights, sounds, time touch) • Trouble with thinking and problem solving • Loss of motor coordination • Increased heart rate
Long term effects • Cancer: 5 joints a day is similar to smoking a full pack of cigarettes. • Lungs: Coughing and wheezing, more chest colds. Lung infections • Immune system: THC damages the cells and tissues that help protect against disease. • Brain: Produces changes in the brain similar to cocaine, heroin, and alcohol users

Signs continued • Bouts of depression • Fatigue • Decline in personal grooming • Decline in school • Withdrawal from family members • Personality changes • Unexplained disappearance of money or possessions
