Biography • Marie was born in Vienna Austria on November 2nd 1755 • Daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa • Marie Antoinette was the 15 child of • She grew up with average schooling.
MARIE’S MARRIAGE! • Marie was soon betrothed to a teenage Louis XVI (she had never met him) in 1769 • She was about 15 years old • She moved to France and the two got married in 1770 • After the death of the King, the two finally got the crown! I am the Queen of France! Do you like my poofy dress?
Marie’s problems… Louis was not willing or able to have children at one point in his life…. This became a problem for Marie, because one of her royal duties was to give France a heir. This was one duty she was serious about completing. It would be about 6 years before the matter was resolved with a minor surgery. Eventually Marie and Louis produced 4 children: Marie Theresa Charlotte, Louis Joseph, Louis Charles and Sophie Beatrix.
Marie was proud, gay Beautiful, compassionate, attractive, extravagant and lively THE POSITIVES…… Marie was popular….at first…
Because of her ‘interests in (MANY) men, Marie was known by many as the Austrian * Self-indulgent, frivolous, weak and wasteful. …..AND THE NEGATIVES…. Marie’s popularity didn’t last very long…
Lifestyle in Versailles: Royals lived very elegant lives, they were exempt from paying taille (a tax that was a huge burden to the 3rd estate. They could do almost anything they wanted (being King and Queen).
They Could: declare wage wars dispense justice (by throwing anybody in jail where and when every they wanted) conduct foreign policy make new laws tax anyone the wished to use vast amounts of owned land for whatever they wanted to Also the had control over: local courts rentals of land and houses hunting rights corn mills wine presses and bread ovens. This is NOT the palace of Versailles!!
The 3RD Estate • The 3rd estate was burdened by the taille • The lived pretty poor lives • They paid high taxes • Had low social status • Did most of the menial labor • Paid most of the taxes • Lived basic lives, some worse than others and they were usually uncertain lives
