  3. The Rules5 Major Areas of Risk Steps teens can take to substantially reduce their risk and parental worries. • Always wear a seatbelt • Avoid distractions • Impaired drivers • Inexperienced drivers • Unsafe drivers

  4. Passenger Agreements • Think about the 5 Rules! • Who is your teen allowed to ride with? • What are the consequences if they do not follow the rules? • What are the rewards if they do follow the rules?

  8. Survival 101 • Drive Safe PA-Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Program • Must be trained to utilize program • Middle School/High School versions • Crash scene photos that correspond with the rules • Allows teens to see consequences of not following the rules

  9. Implementation Classroom based • 45 minutes • Large number of students can be reached in one day • Contract completed as an assignment at home or in computer class and handed in for extra credit • Students speak freely about what is happening when they are in cars with friends

  10. Implementation Auditorium • 1 hour • You reach a large number of students at one time • Little to no one-on-one interaction • Contract completed as assignment at home • Difficult to make sure contract is completed

Implementation Community Based • 1 ½ hours • Traditional format • Parent and teen have time to discuss contract in the class setting • Teen does not speak freely about what truly happens in the car • You tend to reach teens who have parents that are already very involved and discussing these issues.
