25 June 2009 UK Ambassador’s residence LSE/JP Morgan event What does the future hold?Opportunities and challenges for our modern economies A full house, including captains of the industry, bankers, shipowners, and politicians, gathered to address questions, debate and afterwards enjoy a cocktail party in the garden of the British Ambassador’s residence in Athens on June 25, 2009. The exclusive event, organised by the Hellenic Alumni Association of the London School of Economics and Political Scienceand J.P. Morgan, came together to listen to Rebecca Patterson, the global head of foreign exchange and commodities of J.P Morgan’s Private Bank, speaking about challenges in today’s changing economic landscape.Ms Patterson, a previous political and financial journalist, gave her view on, amongst other, tactical opportunities for the common public, the fear of inflation, the role of emerging markets and the US economy’s path to recovery.“The crisis is the result of human greed and a confirmation of human imperfection, said Dimitris Paraskevas, President of the Hellenic LSE Alumni Association. It reminds me of the myth of Daedalus and Icarus; Icarus flied higher than he should, causing his wings to melt and he fell to his death. Banks “flied higher too”, giving more loans than they should. Imperfect laws and imperfect people did not supervise effectively and it is only with more and better education that such crisis may have fewer chances to happen in the future,” Mr Paraskevas concluded.
