Donatello • Donatello was Italian, born in 1386 in Florence. • He died in Florence in 1466.
. • He worked for Lorenzo Ghiberti. • Helping him to make the 1st set of Baptistry doors between 1404-07. • However soon enough he started to work on his own and he outshone Ghiberti!
. • In the 15th century the cathedral of Florence and the church of the Florentine guilds were being decorated. • Donatello carved marble statues for the cathedral and its bell tower.
. • Donatello’s relief bronze piece ‘The Feast of Herod’ shows how he too was an early master of perspective.
. • The ancient Romans were fond of carving soldiers on horseback. • Donatello revived this tradition with his bronze sculpture of ‘Gattamelata’. • It stands 3.5 metres high above the ground, in Padova town square to this day!
