What is Socio-Technical Systems Methodology? • It is a system that provides a framework into the complex operations of an organization. • This methodology examines interrelationships between people (social) and technology (technical) and determines the cause and effect that results from changes to factors/principles within these relationships.

  3. What are the Four STSM Issues? • Internal Environment • The physical and cultural aspects of the organization. • Virtual environments • Traditions • Organizational Values • External Environment • External forces that affect business operations. • Government • Community • Environmental relations • Social Relations • Goodwill

  4. What are the Four STSM Issues? Cont. • Social System • People & Work Practices • Only the social system can improve an organization • The social system is the source of innovation, creativity, & adaptation • Technical System: • The technical computation, communication and multimedia systems. • Internet • Groupware

  5. What is the External Environment? Any and All EXTERNAL forces that affect business operations.

  6. P-People T- Technology WP- Work Process IE- Internal Environment EE- External Environment The organization is a circle containing five components. All components effect each other. A change in one will result in changes in the other four.

Why is the External Environment important in the STMS? • You must consider external factors or you will face severe consequences in the future of the organization. • It is constantly changing and influencing the organization. • Organizations produce items that are desired by the external environment.

Physical Conditions Economic Conditions Political Influences Output Demand Workforce Skills and Availability Global Market Forces Government Regulations The General Public What are factors that contribute to the External Environment?Any external force that affects how the organization operates.

  9. What changes could occur to the External Environment? • Both Predictable Changes and Unpredictable Changes

  10. Do changes to the External Environment affect the other principles within the system? YES! All of the principles are interconnected and dependent upon each other. When one principle changes, the others are affected and must also change.

  11. What happens when changes occur to the External Environment? • The social and technical principles within the organization must also change. • The change provides the organization with an opportunity to improve. • Increases the possibility of success

  12. Why Must Re-designing of the Socio-technical System Take Place? The organization’s structure, functions, and processes must be re-designed to form a balance between the organization and its external environment that is changing.

  13. Some of the Steps Involved in the Re-design Process • outlining the demands of the environment • outlining the scope of the system to be re-designed • developing a vision statement • educating organizational members • preparing proposals of re-design • implementing recommended changes • assessing the changes
