  1. How to Prepare a Poster for presentation Dr. Margaret Gyapong

  2. What is a poster • A communication tool • Combines a verbal presentation with a visual aid. • Used for a small group of people, are limited in time and range of view, • Presents a snapshot of any piece of work • Poster size specifications will differ for each conference; always plan to use the space well. • The average interaction time for a poster presentation is 10-15 minutes.

  3. An Effective Poster • Source of information • Conversation starter • Advertisement of your work • Summary of your work • An effective poster is not just a standard research paper stuck to a board. • A poster uses a different, visual grammar. It shows, not tells

  4. A good poster stand • A visually striking poster • A physical object related to the work (physical demo, mascot) • An auto-running presentation or demo running on a PC • A leaflet to take away • Related publications (papers, book) • A knowledgeable presenter interested on the topic

  5. Some Tips • Do not Overload the poster • Avoid Clashing colors • Background color contrasting with text is the best • Keep text large (24pt) people may be reading from a meter away • Title affiliation and authors should be at the top of the poster

  6. Some Tips • Preparing a poster is very different from preparing a paper. • You are not enlarging your research paper and wallpapering the display board. • You want to edit to very concise language. • Use bullets and numbers to break text visually and aid you in the interactive use of your poster.

  7. Some Tips • Posters are labor intensive, get started well before the due date. • Write your intro/abstract, methods and materials as soon as possible. • Take your pictures well ahead to plan for possible re-dos and enlargements.

  8. Title Information • Suggested format is 90 pt Helvetica or a sans serif font, • Use bold as this reads better from a distance. • Sub titles should be 72 pt. • Divide information into: • Title; Name(s); • Department; etc.

  9. Main Poster • Text should be 18 pt; space and a half; bold. • Never use smaller than 14 point print. • Introduction; • Methods; • Results; • Summary; • Acknowledgments (optional). • Provide references in handout form as they are not necessary for Poster presentations and reduce needed space.

  10. Main Poster • Pick out colors - use color to organize information • Use 1 color for title, intro. and conclusion, 2nd for rest. • Use 3 colors to further accent results from methods and material. • Don't use too many colors.

  11. Some tips • Engaging • Focused on a single message • Let the graphics and text tell the story • Get the main points to as many people as possible • Keep the sequence well ordered
