  1. MRCA T&R Study Self Adhered Base Sheet Lab Results of Adhesion Mobilization Presented by : Rene Dupuis PhD PE President - Structural Research Inc.

  2. Motivations for Study • Field Issues Reported • Little or no adhesion direct to ISO • How much heat is needed to activate SA? • Do all SA base sheets need heat?

  3. Lab Study • Attach SA base sheets to single sample source of 2 inch ISO – Paper/Fiber faced • Evaluate peel strength • Make observations on effects of heat • Make observations on failure mechanisms

  4. Materials Submitted for Testing

  5. Sampling and Testing Procedures

  6. Sampling and Testing Procedures

  7. Typical Sampling Pattern

  8. Conditioning of Samples • All samples assembled at standard Lab temperature • Control group left at lab temperature • One test group was heat treated for 3 hours at 176°F • Another test group was heat treated for 35 minutes at 320°F, then 30 minutes at 200°F • Based on 1987 BUR study.

  9. Original Testing Substrate Before Heat Treatment

  10. ISO after 320 °F = Not Happy

  11. Facer is 6 in x 10 in

  12. Polyglass at Lab Temperature

  13. Polyglass at 176°F

  14. Polyglass at 320°F / 200°F

  15. CertainTeed at Lab Temperature

  16. CertainTeed at 176°F

  17. CertainTeed at 320°F / 200°F

  18. Soprema at Lab Temperature

  19. Soprema at 176°F

  20. Soprema at 320°F / 200°F

  21. Observations • Heat input and product formulation appear to have pronounced effects on peel strength • Peel strength results at lab temperature and after 3 hours at 176°F are very similar • Generally cohesive failures observed in the ISO facer • High recurrence suggests weak link in system type

  22. Observations • Adhesive failure noted in one sample at lab temperature • Manufacturer's directions clearly state need for heat input. • Cohesive failure observed in one sample treated at high temperature • Possible migration of maltenes within product? • Cohesive failure observed in one sample treated at high temperature • Possible migration of maltenes within product?

  23. Conclusions • Heat input from solar load and time should give similar to elevated heat input from another at shorter times. • Results of this study tracks and confirms results of MRCA 2003 study of lap strengths of SA materials.
