  2. Basic Information Ecuador lies next to a subduction zone. Reventador is located in Ecuador along the Cordillera Real within the Andes mountains.  

  3. The caldera stretches 4km across and there is a stratovolcano formed in the middle reaching 1300m in height, almost reaching the rim of the older caldera. Reventador summit reaches 3,562m or 11,686ft.

  4. Reventador is one of the most active volcanoes in Ecuador, and last erupted in 2008. In 2002, Reventador reached a VEI of 4, the most powerful in the volcano’s recorded history.

  5. As a stratovolcano, Reventador erupts violently and produces lots of ash in singular eruption column. Reventador has also been known to produce large pyroclastic flows extending about 8 km

  6. Hazards: • Lahar’s • 2-5mm of ash • Lava flows • Pyroclastic flows

  7. Due to the slightly viscous magma that erupts from Reventador, the usual rocks found are andesite rocks that are often porphyritic. Olivine, plagioclase, and amphibole are all found in Reventador’s porphyritic rocks.

  8. These are some rocks found at Reventadorfrom the pyroclastic flow in 2002.

  9. Occasional Hydrothermal steam eruptions and a travel ban on the mountain due to danger

  10. The volcano is monitored using a 16-node wireless sensor network, which produces new reports monthly.
