Shades Of Meaning Samantha Simcik
What is it? • A pre-reading activity that builds students’ vocabulary and understanding of relationships between words.
Why does it matter? • Large vocabulary helps students find the “right word” instead of talking circles around in • In math and science, it is easy for students to be confused by terms • Disengaged students disconnect from material • Students need to understand how these words relate to each other, and change the context of a sentence
Steps • Choose a continuum to be discussed and initiate discussion on ways it can be explained Ex. Light: bright, dim, glaring, glow Our example: Give me words that describe size
Steps 2. Ask students to put these terms into a continuum by writing these on their paint chips Ex. dim glow bright glaring Our example: arrange the words on your chip in a continuum
Steps 3. Ask students to attach paint chip to notebook paper and write a sentence for each of the terms. Discuss how subtle differences between related words can change the sentence.
