Foundational Datasets • Who? • Customers vs. Partners (common operating picture)? • Traditional data • Observations • NDFD • Local Datasets (case studies, climate data, etc.) • Non-traditional data • Role of the local forecast office – quite often the facilitator to access and interpretation of the data • We don’t give them the data, but we help them process and interpret it

Harmful Algal Bloom • Contacted by Northwest Fisheries Science Center about Harmful Algal Bloom Project • Development of an early warning system for harmful algal blooms in Puget Sound/Hood Canal • Significant health and economic impacts • Need two things: • Some harmful algae in the water - Environmental Sample Processor (ESP) system (identifies presence of harmful Algae in the water • favorable conditions in the water column for algal boom: • Temperature • Salinity • Density • stratification • Temperature • Wind • Precipitation • River Runoff

  5. Preliminary Plans • Initial work by NWFSC based on meteorological inputs at: • Port Townsend (Temperature, Precipitation) • West Point (Wind) • Skagit River (Mt. Vernon) • 5-7 day leadtime • Grad student at NWFSC • NWS will likely process NDFD and river gage data for project

  6. Take advantage of NDFD database 2.5 km resolution hourly temporal resolution for some elements 47 forecast points on Western Washington rivers… Expand elsewhere Future Plans
