  1. New Technology to treat ear infections

  2. What is an Ear Infection? • Three main types of ear infections • Acute otitis media (AOM) • Otitis media with effusion (OME) • Otitsexterna (Swimmer’s Ear) • They can be caused by certain forms of bacteria • Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilusinfluenzae, and Moraxellacatarrhalis • Viruses can also cause these particular types of ear infections • Respiratory syncitial virus, rhinovirus, influenzae viruses, and adenoviruses • Exposure to irritants or allergens can also effect the ear

  3. Iphone accessory can detect ear infections • Researchers at Georgia Tech and Emory University have developed a Remotoscope • It is an accessory that turns an iPhone into an ear-inspecting otoscope so doctors can treat children remotely for ear infections • This attachment takes photos of children's ear and allows the doctor to monitor the progress of the infection • The doctor would then be able to prescribe antibiotics only if needed to prevent the growth of bacterial infections • This would reduce the risk of these bacteria developing antibiotic resistance

  4. Remotoscope trials • The remotoscope is currently undergoing clinical trials. • Researchers hope to publish the results by the end of the year • There is not yet a given release date for when consumers can acquire the device. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c_ccTpwgA8&feature=player_embedded&noredirect=1
